The Registrar and Chief Executive of the National Examination Council, NECO, Prof. Dantani Wushishi has said results of candidates from debtor states may, henceforth, be withheld until the governments of the affected states defray the money owed.
Overall amount of money owed NECO by the affected states is put at N5.5 billion.
Wushishi disclosed this on Tuesday, October 11, as the examination body released the 2023 Senior School Certificate Examination results.
He, however, did not name the states that are owing the said sum. He explained that some of the state had made commitments to pay with the examination body.
According to Wushishi, 61 percent of the candidates scored five credits, including English and Mathematics.
The Registrar disclosed that the debt was incurred between 2012 and 2023 as the states took responsibility for the registration of indigent candidates for the examination.
He stressed, “It is the money we use for the running of the Council. They should please pay up. We will not release the results of candidates from these states.”
Noting the poor performance of candidates from some states, he stressed the need for them to look inwards to review their education and look also at all sectors of the education.
Wushishi revealed that a total of 1,296,985 candidates sat for the 2023 SSCE examination, as he announced that Abia State and the Federal Capital Territory topped the chart of the 36 states followed by Adamawa and Akwa Ibom states.
A total of 616,398 male and 580,587 females wrote the 2023 NECO examination.
