State Attorneys-General and Commissioners for Justice from Nigeria’s 36 states, along with key stakeholders in the justice sector, will gather in Abuja on Monday, September 9, 2024, for a crucial one-day roundtable aimed at tackling corruption in the country.
This was announced by Demola Bakare, the Acting Director of Public Enlightenment and Education and Spokesperson for the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC.
The event, known as the AGs Summit, themed ‘Building a Unified Front Against Corruption in Nigeria,’ is organized by the ICPC with support from the MacArthur Foundation.
According to Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, Chairman of the ICPC, the summit is a strategic initiative designed to bolster anti-corruption efforts across all tiers of government and to strengthen cooperation between the ICPC and State Attorneys-General in advancing the National Anti-Corruption Strategy, NACS.
The Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, will serve as the special guest of honour, while former Attorney-General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi, SAN, will deliver the keynote address on the summit’s theme.
The event will also include a dynamic panel discussion led by Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, former Attorney-General of Lagos State. Other distinguished panelists include Ekpo Nta, former ICPC Chairman; Prof. Mohammed Tabiu, SAN, of Bayero University, Kano; Prof. Abdulkarim Kana, SAN (Designate), from Nasarawa State University, Keffi; and Barr. Hauwa Abubakar, Attorney-General of Borno State.
This engagement aims to identify and address systemic challenges within the justice system that perpetuate corruption, undermining the ICPC’s mission. The summit also seeks to devise effective strategies to enhance the ICPC’s capacity for corruption prevention, foster a stronger partnership between the ICPC and State Attorneys-General, and pinpoint areas for collaboration between the ICPC and state governments.
