Six persons, including two expatriates and two police inspectors were killed by gunmen, on Friday, August 5, in an attack launched against their convoy in Kogi state.
Two drivers of the expatriates, who were working with West Africa Ceramics Company (WACC), Ajaokuta region of Kogi state, were also killed.
SP William Ovye-Aya, the Kogi state police command, while confirming the attack on Saturday, August 6, in a statement, said, that six victims including two expatriates, two company drivers, and two police inspectors died in the exchange of fire with the gunmen along Lokoja-Ajaokuta road around 8 pm on Friday.
According to the police spokesperson, the expatriates were being escorted by police to the ceramic company on Friday evening, August 5, when the gunmen attacked them.
Ovye-Aya added that the area commander and a detachment of Military in the area had to reinforce the scene before the gunmen fled, according to The Vanguard.
He further noted that the state commissioner of police, Edward Egbuka, has equally ordered the deployment of additional operational assets consisting of operatives of the Police Mobile Force (PMF), Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), quick response unit, State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in synergy with other security agencies to restore normalcy in the area.
The spokesperson said, “The commissioner is assuring the public that the command is committed to working in synergy with other security agencies as well as patriotic stakeholders to make the State a safe and secure place for all and sundry.
“He has further asked the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to commence investigations into the unfortunate incident so as to unravel the cause of the attack with a view to bringing the perpetrators to book,” Mr Ovye-Aya assured.
