A fatal road accident on the Kaduna-Abuja expressway has resulted in the death of one person and left three others injured, according to the Kaduna sector command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The crash occurred at Olam along the expressway around 11:01 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24.
According to Sector Commander Kabir Nadabo, a Golf car with the registration number SBG 87 XB, traveling from Minna in Niger State, collided with an unnumbered trailer heading towards Kaduna.
The investigation revealed that the crash was caused by over speeding, fatigue, and loss of control.
Out of the six people involved, three were injured and taken to Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital in Kaduna for treatment. Unfortunately, the driver of the Golf car lost his life in the accident.
The command recovered N8.7 million from the accident scene, which is currently being held pending identification by the owner.
In response to recent road accidents in Oyo, Kano, and Kaduna states, FRSC Corps Marshal Dauda Biu proposed imposing jail terms on drivers responsible for road accidents.
Biu emphasized the need for stringent penalties to deter reckless driving and called on state governments to prosecute violators of road laws, suggesting that jail terms without the option of fines could serve as an effective deterrent.
He also highlighted the FRSC’s collaboration with the judiciary to expedite the trial of drivers involved in accidents and noted a significant decrease in fatalities during the 2024 Easter and Eid-el-Fitr holidays compared to the previous year, attributing this improvement to ongoing road safety initiatives.
Biu’s proposals and the FRSC’s efforts underscore a concerted effort to enhance road safety and ensure accountability for drivers involved in accidents nationwide.
